Fremantle Foundry has successfully completed a full overhaul of two Ulstein 1650H azimuth thrusters for KOONA, operated by Broome Marine and Tugboat Services, delivering a high-quality outcome under complex logistical conditions.
The thrusters were removed from the vessel and transported to Fremantle Foundry’s Henderson workshop, where both units underwent a complete strip-down and detailed inspection. During this process, cracked steering gears were identified on both the port and starboard units.
With limited availability of these specialised components in Australia, replacement steering gears were sourced from Canada, where the Ulstein 1650H series is more widely supported. This approach ensured the project remained on track while maintaining the required technical standards.
Scope of works included:
- Full disassembly and detailed inspection
- Crack identification and component assessment
- Procurement of replacement steering gears
- Precision reassembly with correct backlash, contact patterns and tolerances
- Final laser alignment
- Commissioning and successful sea trials
Following overhaul and testing, both thrusters were transported back to KOONA and securely remounted, ready for continued operation.
This project highlights Fremantle Foundry’s capability to deliver complex marine engineering works, combining technical expertise with practical problem-solving to overcome supply and logistical challenges.
